I have been a laptop computer user for almost 15 years. Through the years I've owned Acer, IBM, Dell, HP and Toshiba. Each laptop had a specific purpose when I bought it and this one was no different. I saw a similar model at a Bestbuy a few weeks ago and fell in love with the back-lit keyboard and lighted track pad. That laptop had a small screen - around 14 inches and that just didn't meet my needs.

My current laptop is going on 4 years old and the battery is starting to really suffer from use. When I found the replacement would cost $130, I decided to look at new laptops. I checked with Toshiba to see what models had back-lit keyboards. This was the one I bought.

This unit has a lot of great features in addition to the back-lit keyboard. The Harmon-Kardon speaker system is outstanding, the 15.6 screen is more than adequate and the i-5 processor strikes a nice compromise between price and performance. The unit comes with 4 gig of memory that I upgraded to 8. Keep in mind that there are only 2 memory slots and both are filled with 2-gig ddr3 SO-DIMM memory. I was fortunate that one of the memory sticks actually fits my netbook so I got 2 memory boosts for the price of one. While the hard drive could be a little larger and the processor could be faster and the screen could be larger, I think it is the perfect mix of the most important elements in a laptop. Not too heavy, 4+ hour battery, more than reasonable computing power, a very sexy screen, really good sound all wrapped up in a stylish package.

What it lacks:
Many of the laptops I looked at have added WiMax compatibility, this isn't one of them. As previously mentioned, it has 4 gig of ram and the memory slots are filled. In this day of really huge drives or (even better) solid state drives, this unit lacks both. The hard drive is made by Hitachi which I find a comfort, but is a relatively small, 500 gig. It has auto parking technology so if it crashes it doesn't destroy any data. Unfortunately, it is EXTREMELY sensitive. Any movement at all causes an alert telling you the hard drive heads are parked because you breathed on it. So if you plan on using this on your lap or any place this isn't steady, you may have to disable that feature. It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. I like it, others may want to upgrade to a different version.

All in all I can't express how much I LOVE this laptop. Of all the laptops I have bought and used over the years, this is definitely the coolest looking, and easily the best low light unit you will find. If money is a big concern yet you need better than "good" performance, you won't go wrong with this unit. While some have criticized Toshiba as a laptop manufacturer, I can tell you we now own 4 Toshiba's in our family. We have used their service once which was a really wonderful experience and the overall quality of the laptops have been much better than average. It's not Alienware but it's not Acer either. I was seriously considering HP but this one really is the best I looked at. As an aside, it qualifies for the free XBox promotion going on with Microsoft. So if you have a student you plan on getting a laptop for, that is an added incentive.
