Quick version: Best sandy bridge laptop on the market for it's price. Quality build, quality parts, Toshiba has a reputation for great products with good customer service, decent battery life, snappy system, perfect for school use, or every day computing. Read on for a more in-depth review:
I picked this little guy up for $500 here on Amazon on a Wednesday, shipped and sold by Beach Cameras. To my surprise, it arrived via FedEx on the following Saturday (FedEx is typically a company I have nothing but problems with) and worked just fine out of the box.
Everything but the eco utility were useless to me, so I uninstalled anything Toshiba related and installed all of Windows 7's updates. The first time I used it on battery mode, however, the computer shut itself off with 30% of it's life left. I ran batterymon (a free to try for 30 days diagnostic software) and found out the 4400 mAh battery was only working at a capacity of 3000 mAh. Toshiba's support quickly mailed me a new battery, and all is now well.
Beware other Intel i3 laptops, even up to the $600+ range, which aren't nearly as powerful as this model. The i3 2310m processors offer superior performance, come coupled with higher quality Intel graphical processors, and use far less energy than the first generation i3 CPUs, as well as anything AMD currently has to offer.
This is the best price on a quality i3 2310m laptop around. HP offers 2-4 models for the same price point, but I refuse to buy another HP product for as long as I live.
My ONLY complaint: This model comes preinstalled with the 6-cell 4400 mAh capacity PA3817U-1BRS model battery, instead of the similar size and weight 6-cell PA3818U-1BRS model battery with 5300 mAh capacity. Either way it's a moot point to me because I plan on buying a 12-cell PA3819U-1BRS model battery with 9000 mAh, or at least a third party aftermarket compatible version.
It's not a hardcore gaming machine, the intel graphics on this system is worlds ahead of previous generation intel graphics (and even some radeon and nvidia chips put on some laptops) but it can't run new, higher end games. Small games, such as the Popcap line up, facebook games, Sims 3, etc, run perfectly fine. Even World of Warcraft (which, to be fair, is designed to run on even the slowest of systems) can be run on medium-ish settings without trouble.
Laptop took me awhile to get used to, I've never had a 15.4" laptop with a full number pad on it. Touchpad is responsive, but multi-touch functions are a bit.... dumb. Two finger scrolling only works half the time, but side scrolling works perfectly fine.
